Golden Gate Bridge - San Francisco, CA

About the Golden Gate Bridge

The Golden Gate Bridge is inarguably the most famous landmark of San Francisco. The suspension bridge was officially opened in 1937 after four years of battle with the elements (winds, fog and treacherous tides). The bridge crosses the strait from San Francisco to the Marin headlands. The bridge stretches to 1.7 miles in length. Before 1993, it was the tallest bridge of any kind in the city.

The building of this bridge was estimated to have cost $39 million (with interest). There were 11 workers who died during the building of this bridge. It took 10 years to finish planning this bridge due to the engineering challenges posed by the natural conditions of the area with which the bridge is built on.

The Golden Gate Bridge is also open to pedestrians and bicyclists. Tourists can walk the sidewalk of the bridge or ride a bike during daylight hours. However, tourists who bring roller blades, roller skates and skateboards are not permitted access to the bridge. There are parking spaces on either sides of the bridge. Hence, tourists are able to enjoy vista points on the north and south sides of the bridge.
