Chinatown - San Francisco, CA

About Chinatown

Chinatown in San Francisco is not only the largest outside of Asia, but also the oldest in North America. It is one of the top destinations for tourists who visit San Francisco. Chinatown is located within Grant Avenue and Stockton Street. There are four Chinatowns in the city: the other three are on Clement Street, Irving Street, and Noriega Street. But the Chinatown located at Grant Avenue and Stockton Street is called the “original” Chinatown in San Francisco, and is the oldest of the four.

San Francisco’s Chinatown played an important role in helping the ethnic Chinese immigrant community flourish in North America. To this day, the cultural, religious and ethnic identities of the Chinese residents in the area are still very much alive.

If it were a testament to the popularity of Chinatown in San Francisco, it draws more tourists than the iconic Golden Gate Bridge on an annual basis. Chinatown covers 24 blocks in an area of San Francisco that is bordered by the neighborhoods of Telegraph Hill and North Beach. There are two major thoroughfares within Chinatown: Grant Avenue (this is where you will find the Chinatown Gate landmark) and Stockton Street (is less crowded by tourists, and where the fish markets and restaurants are).
